Hiking in Japan - Mt Kongo
In the spring of 2017 I spent a week visiting Osaka, Japan. Having seen enough of the city I wanted to get out to the mountains for a day hike. So I hopped a train south and then made my way to a bus stop which I knew would take me to Mt Kongo. However, I didn't know which was the best trail up the mountain. So while I was waiting for the bus I asked a Japanese man dressed in hiking gear if he had any information. He said he was waiting for friends to pick him and they were going to hike the same mountain. He offered me a ride and the rest is history.

That roads been closed forever. I know the Heather Lake trail very well and area around that, and the road, but have yet to go on that exact trail. Think they are currently fixing the road up too, as the whole road up use to be super messed up. I wish they would fix other roads nearby, but those trails would also be crowded so maybe its a good thing.

A great place to hike, Brice Creek Falls is only a quarter mile from Cedar creek campground, easy for anyone. My wife likes to paint there. I could spend every day just sitting there enjoying the falls.

Suggestion for slopes with loose rocks: It's better to stick close by the person you're climbing with than it is to leave space between the two of you. The reason is because the closer you are together, the less momentum/speed any rocks that you dislodge will have if they do come into contact with your climbing partner. A rock that has been bouncing down the side of a steep slope for 50 feet is going to have a lot more momentum and be a lot more dangerous than a rock that has only been rolling down the slope for two or three feet. Plus, when you're on loose rocks on a steep slope, you might not have a lot of room to maneuver and jump out of the way if a rock is flying down the hill at you. Sticking close together is better than leaving space.

I tried this yesterday before discovering this and got into some pretty exposed bits where the trail looked like it had fallen away. The trail is on AllTrails and goes all the way to the Mirador del Fitz Roy but I couldn’t find a viable path. It’s so beautiful up there.

Kudos to you guys! You must be crazy to make it to the summit. I chickened out just before the summit approach. My altimeter said 6000ft when I turned around. I knew I wasn't going to make it when I got to the top of the ridge near that twisted dead tree and saw the massive drop on the other side. Vertigo hits like a truck sometimes.

At 17:22 she says that a lot of the loose gravelly stuff has already been kicked out of the way. I did the haystack recently and have to disagree. You can mostly avoid the loose gravelly stuff if you try but there is plenty of it there.

Back in the late 70’s , early 80’s I used to run/jog up to the very base of haystack then immediately turn around and run down… lots of black and lost toenails from the foot jamming into the toe box of my hiking boots!! I used to live a stones throw from the Rattlesnake lake trail… fun times back then!
